Abstract
This paper is a preliminary approach to the comprehensive understanding of the medieval Chinese Buddhist miraculous images, or ruixiang. Past studies on ruixiang have been mainly case studies, dealing with particular cases, such as the “King Udayana’s Image,” “King Asoka’s Image,” “Miraculous Image of the Fanhe County,” and so on. The accumulation of case studies leads us to situate medieval Chinese miraculous images in a larger historical context, and consider them as an independent theme. This paper examines how ruixiang have been studied so far under the rubric of legend, form, and text. By describing significant topics previously raised and providing further issues to consider, this essay tries to highlight the historical and art-historical meaning and value of miraculous images. In a chapter about legend, I examine the patterns and characteristics of ruixiang stories. In particular, I focus on the King Udayana’s Image, tracing how the legend had been revised and embellished over the course of time. The analysis of different versions of the story reveals that the purpose of image-making, as it is described in the legend, changed from “merit-making” to the creation of something to substitute the absent Buddha. I also provide contemporary textual sources where we can trace similar changes in the conception of image-making. In so doing, I emphasize the value of the ruixiang stories, as a window through which we can have a glimpse into the ontological status of religious icons imagined and conceived by medieval Chinese Buddhists. Under the heading of form, I criticize how the visual aspects of miraculous images have been consumed by modern art historians in the frame of old methodologies. So-called “King Udayana type” or “King Asoka type” are the cases in point. I highlight the problems and confusions the habitual use of such terms have brought about. At the same time, I suggest that we should pay attention to the idiosyncratic features of miraculous images and consider them as creative outcomes produced by medieval Chinese Buddhists. Last part of the paper introduces textual sources related to the study of miraculous images. I particularly point out that the compilation of miraculous images emerged from the mid seventh century, as represented by the renowned work, Ji Shenzhou sanbao gantong lu by Daoxuan. I argue that we need to consider the historical and cultural background of the increased interest in miraculous images during the period. I suggest that the massive introduction of famous images from India and Central Asia to China by pilgrims such as Xuanzang and the compilation of the information of the western regions might be related to the phenomenon. I also briefly indicate that the phenomenon can be considered in conjunction with the representation of miraculous images at the Mogao Cave in Dunhuang.
