Abstract

This study conducted a computational fluid dynamics (CFD)-based numerical analysis of the parametric rolling phenomenon, as addressed in the Second-Generation Intact Stability Criteria (SGISC) proposed by the International Maritime Organization (IMO). A four-degree-of-freedom (surge, heave, pitch, and roll) simulation was conducted using STAR-CCM+ for the KRISO Standard Container Ship (KCS) under sea conditions with a range of nondimensional wavelength ratios (λ/L) from 0.5 to 2.2. Simulation results revealed that strong resonance effects and large roll amplitudes exceeding ±20 degrees occurred when the ratio of encounter frequency to the ship’s natural roll frequency was approximately 1.9 to 2.3. Outside this range, the roll motion remained stable with minimal amplitude. CFD results showed high qualitative agreement with model test data, thereby demonstrating the predictive accuracy and reliability of the proposed numerical model. These results demonstrate that the CFD approach can be effectively utilized for assessing the risk of parametric rolling within the framework of the SGISC.
