Abstract

This study assessed the separation and recovery efficiency of Fe and Ni, nuclides classified as difficult-to-measure by the Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, using selective radionuclide separation via column chromatography. The evaluation examined each test procedure for the recovery of target elements and removal of interfering ones. Results indicated that Fe and Ni were successfully separated and recovered, with efficiencies of 99.98% and 99.15%, respectively, confirming the method’s effectiveness. However, Ca was eluted alongside Fe and Ni at rates of 4.81% and 6.94%, acting as an interfering element. This suggests that additional removal techniques are required to further purify the samples by minimizing Ca presence. Furthermore, the study's findings on chemical separation characteristics could be valuable for quality control systems. Specifically, the methods could aid in creating background matrices within similar media, confirming the cleanliness of equipment and glassware, and enhancing operator proficiency. This quality framework has the potential to improve accuracy and reproducibility in nuclide analysis, especially in radioactive waste sample assessments, thereby supporting robust quality management practices in the field.
