Abstract

The ‘New Negro’ implies an agent who reconstructed the intellectual and creative powers of African-Americans by overcoming dehumanization of the past to blacks and reviving black culture, as a fully human who broke free of blind self-negation, a sense of inferiority to whites, and antagonism in a while and recovered its identity. The African-American artists and intellectuals of the Harlem Renaissance, which was centered in Harlem in New York City in the 1920s and 1930s, built up the ‘New Negro’ who embodied the awareness of decolonization and racial consciousness as a new image of black people. The ‘New Negro,’ a modern figure, sought the racial consciousness, the pride through the Harlem Renaissance, and a new racial identity of blacks based on their desire for emancipation. The ‘New Negro’ artists, who took the initiative in representation of blacks for the first time in the American history, showed practice of post-colonialism theory by conveying resistance to racism and the New Negro’s identity in their works and revealing the fictionality of racial stereotypes, deconstruction of dichotomy, hybridity, and the issue of class consciousness that were addressed as major issues by the academic world of Britain and the United States.
