Abstract

Taking notice of ‘capital’, which is a keyword that sums up Beuys’ work in the 1970s, this study considered the process of formation of the concept of ‘capital’ and Capital Space 1970-1977(1980), which is an installation work. Beuys’ ‘expanded concept of art’, which broke away from the existing formative work, is developed into ‘social sculptures’ that pursue the development and change of society, and all those who exert creativity to realize social sculptures become artists. This requires the proposition ‘art=creativity’. In particular, Beuys found problems of capitalist societies in economic inequality and began to be interested in economy from the late 1970s. He read through diverse economic theories ranging from Smith and Ricardo to Marx, Luhman, and Schmundt and derived another proposition, ‘art=capital’, which is regarding ‘capital’ as an ‘art’ for which human creativity has been exerted, by breaking away from the concept of capital associated with money. Capital Space 1970-1977(1980), an installation work of Beuys, is composed of three types of objects, they are, machines, everyday objects, and blackboards, which were used or replaced by the same type of what were used in Kassel Documenta 5(1972) and 6(1977), performing arts of Edinburgh(1970) and Basel(1971). In other words, these objects are meaningful in that they are means of production that derived the concept termed ‘capital’, not as artworks as originals. Therefore, the audience’s intention to appreciate this huge installation work from an aesthetic viewpoint or a formal aspect becomes to face limitations. Instead, in cases where audiences question and think about the invisible concept titled ‘capital’ while looking at the combinations and relationships of disparate objects, the installation space of Capital, where the products of past acts are gathered, acquires nowness. In short, what Beuys intended is the active attitude of the audience, that is, the activation of consciousness. The installation work of Capital emphasizes reviving and activating the latent ability of human beings to perceive, feel and think thereby making audiences identify Beuys’s compound proposition, ‘art=creativity=capital’. In short, the installation space of Capital is a space for perceiving and thinking for a new change of individuals and society and it ultimately aims at ‘social sculpture’, which is an art of life to act and practice, that is, a free democratic society.
