Abstract

The history of art after the end of art Park Yeemun (Distinguished Visiting Professor, Yonsei University) It is with reference to a Danto's book, <After the End of Art> that assuming the aburdity of writing a history of art without the actual existence, continuous creative activity and appreciation of works of art as well as a clear and adequate concept of art, the paper intends first 1) to explicate the meaning of the word, 'end' in Danto's above book, which in reality consists in showing not the end of art but only the inadequacy of all existing concepts of art, 2) to show the inadequacy of Danto's proposed definition of the concept of art, which is too broad, and finally to argue for the necessity of replacing his definition by my own new definition in order to properly understand what art is. and to write a history of art proper in the future. In conclusion I argue that since until now no adequate concepts of art have not been available, all histories of art so far written are not histories of art proper but only histories related in various ways to art.
