Abstract
This study investigated the feasibility of utilizing chloride bypass dust (CBPD) and its washed residue (WR), which are byproducts of the cement industry, as controlled low-strength materials (CLSM). The fundamental mix design characteristics were examined by replacing ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and slag cement (SC) with CBPD and WR at substitution ratios of 25%, 50%, and 75%,respectively. The effects on water-to-cement ratio (W/C), flowability, and compressive strength were analyzed. As the replacement level increased from 25% to 75%, both CBPD and WR mixtures exhibited reduced flowability and compressive strength. Notably, WR required a higher W/C than CBPD to maintain equivalent workability, which was attributed to the pronounced early hydration activity of portlandite, a primary mineral in WR. Compressive strength measurements at 3, 7, and 28 days of curing revealed that the SC-based mixtures outperformed their OPC counterparts. This enhancement is linked to the latent hydraulic properties that are activated by the alkali components in CBPD and WR. At the 75% replacement level, both OPC and SC mixtures satisfied the 28-day compressive strength criterion (≤8.3 MPa) stipulated by ACI 229 Committee for CLSM, thereby confirming the viability of these mixtures as sustainable alternatives in CLSM applications.
