Abstract
Kui-feng Tsung-mi was born in 180 A.D. in China. He has exerted a strong influence in the history of Chinese Buddhism. His most important contribution to Chinese Buddhism is to unify the theoretical doctrines and the practical Chan. According to his biography, Tsung-mi had three steps to attain enlightenment. Each step depends on the teaching of the Chan, the Yuan-chueh-ching, and the Hua-yen-ding. In this paper, I demonstrate the following with regard to Tsung-mi's theory of practice: 1) Tsung-mi was based on not only Buddhist but also Confucian doctrines for the development of his own way of practice. This appears in his work Yuan-jen-lun, 2) Tsung-mi gave a good interpretation to the practice in the Yuan-chueh-ching. For this, he wrote the Yuan-chueh-ching-tao-chan-hsiu-cheng, and 3) Tsung-mi unifies the theory of practices of each Chan sects. This characteristic is well presented in the Chan-yuan-chu-chuan-chi-tu-hsu.
