Abstract
The possibility of doctrinal interpretation of specific Buddhist Sütra is widely open. In some recent research, it is argued that the Perfect Enlightenment Sütra is the same as the Ch’an Sutra. When we define the meaning of the concept of the Ch' an Sutra as 1) a Ch ’an Sutra established in India, 2) a Sutra where the influence of the Ch’an sect of China is reflected, and 3) a Sutra that is adopted as the basis of the Ch’an sect(所依經典)， the question is whether and in what sense the definition of the Ch’an Sütra can be applied to the Perfect Enlightenment Sutra. I examined these questions by analyzing the aspect of the history of the establishment of the Perfect Enlightenment Sütra as well as that of its history of interpretation, and found the following results:
