Vasubandhu’s Perspective on the Mindstream (saṃtati/saṃtāna) of Sentient Being (sattva): The Theory of Antarābhava in the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya Chapter Lokanirdeśa

In this study, I examine the unique characteristics of antarābhava reflected in the theory of saṃsāra in Buddhism by paying close attention to two interrelated points: (a) Vasubandhu’s distinct theoretical position in the Buddhist doctrines, and (b) antarābhava described in the Abhidharmakośabhāṣya Chapter Lokanirdeśa (世間品). In so doing, this study illustrates that antarābhava appeared in the history of Buddhism as a new entity in the cycle of birth, life and death. The emergence of antarābhava, I thus indicate, enabled to extend the thoughts of Buddhism that conflate heterogeneous beings such as karma, no-self, and saṃsāra. Buddhism, by virtue of the emergence and development of antarābhava, was established and flourished as the unique thoughts that noticeably differ from other religious doctrines.
