한강의 단편소설 「내 여자의 열매」는 작가의 소설 세계 속에서 식물적 상상력의 근원으로 이해되어 왔다. 본 논문은 「내 여자의 열매」에 나타나는 식물성을 후속 작품과의 연관시키지 않고 독립적으로 탐구하려는 작업의 소산이다. 이 소설 속에서의 식물성이란 자신의 의지대로 위치를 바꿀 수 없는, 자유 없는 구속의 상태로 나타난다. 그러나 동시에 자족적이고 비폭력적인 존재의 상징으로 이해되기도 한다. 양자를 편견 없이 고루 살피기 위해서 여성 인물뿐 아니라 남성 인물의 심리 및 행동에 대해서도 세심하게 분석하려 했다. 1997년이라는 시점을 기준으로 「내 여자의 열매」의 남성 인물이 보여 주는 인식의 수준과 행위의 양상을 살펴본 것이다. 그 결과 ‘식물적 상상력’을 긍정적 요소로 해석한 기존의 연구와 어느 정도 거리를 둘 수밖에 없었다. 평범하고 소박한 삶을 소망하던 남편과 자유의 꿈을 포기해 버렸던 아내의 불안한 공존을 들여다보면 여성을 속박하는 결혼이라는 제도와 완강한 가부장적 질서가 드러난다. 화분 속에 담겨 종속된 삶을 강요당하는 식물의 초월 욕망은 좌절되었다. 중요한 것은 그가 생을 마감한 자리가 탈출을 꿈꾸었던 처음의 그 자리라는 점이다. 「내 여자의 열매」라는 이름의 소설 공간은 여성의 삶이 남성의 의지에 의해 좌우되고, 여성의 욕망이 애초부터 제한되거나 남성의 배려에 의해서만 부분적으로 실현되는 세계이다. 두 말할 필요 없이 남성이 헤게모니를 쥔 가부장적 현실사회의 축도라고 할 수 있다.
Abstract
Han Gang's short story My Lady’s Berry has been understood as a source of botanical imagination in the author's fictional world. This thesis is the product of a work that attempts to independently explore the vegetability of My Lady’s Berry without correlating it with subsequent works. Vegetability in this novel appears in a state of restraint without freedom, unable to change their position at will. However, it is also understood as a symbol of a self-sufficient and non-violent existence. In order to examine both without prejudice, I tried to analyze the psychology and behavior of male as well as female character in detail. This is to infer the level of awareness and behavior of the male character in this work based on the time of 1997. As a result, a conclusion was reached that was different from the previous studies that interpreted botanical imagination as a positive factor. Looking into the anxious coexistence of a husband who longed for an ordinary and simple life and a wife who had given up on their dream of freedom, the system of marriage that binds women and the stubborn patriarchal order are revealed. The plant's desire for transcendence, which was put in a flowerpot and forced to live a subordinate life, was thwarted. The important thing is that the place where he died was the first place he wanted to escape. My Lady’s Berry is a novel depicting a world in which women's lives are governed by men's will, and women's desires are either limited from the beginning or are only partially realized by men's consideration. Needless to say, it can be said to be the epitome of a real patriarchal society in which men have hegemony.
