Abstract
The aesthetics of Schumann’s music and its development can be explained in terms of three progressive phases: one that shows his rebel against the contemporary conventions of musical rules and aspiration towards direct expression of nature channeled through one’s unique inspiration and creativity ─ one that expresses much of an adolescent’s poetic aesthetics ─ followed, then, by a period where he acknowledged the objective values embedded in the musical rules and endeavored to incorporated them into his musical theory, which finally led to a stage devoted to seeking a spiritual language of poesie. This last stage of Schumann’s musical development in particular was one that pursued a poesie of clarity and simplicity towards ‘a loftier nature’ rather than fancy techniques or skills. Such musical development of Schumann’s is best shown in his early works for the piano and lieds. Moreover, the stylistic changes found in his later works after 1848 can be understood not as a regression from ‘the poetic’ but a willful progression towards its completion.
