Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to examine the correlation between the African philosophy of ubuntu and the African music structure, polyrhythm, from the perspective of multicultural music education, and to suggest embodied learning approaches to experience ubuntu through polyrhythm ensemble. To achieve its purpose, this study firstly addresses a multicultural philosopher, Charles Taylor, and multicultural music education scholars’ perspectives; while setting up the goal of multicultural music education as a realization of human beings through participatory musical experiences in diverse cultures. Secondly, it discusses the significance of musical understanding in cultural context and the characteristic elements of embodied learning emphasized by Dalcroze Eurhythmics as a way of integrating cultural understanding into musical learning. Thirdly, it investigates the cultural and musical meaning of ubuntu and characteristic African polyrhythmic structures and introduces embodied learning approaches that can help students to experience ubuntu through polyrhythm ensemble in music class. This study is expected to provide useful insights for the embodied learning approaches, which can inspire students’ active participation in experiencing ubuntu through polyrhythm, thereby enriching our understanding of the African music culture.
