Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to shed light on the problem of what features of digital technology give rise to the modification of narrative structure in film. The relevance of this context will be explained not through the empirical observation, but on the basis of the theoretical consideration. According to Luhmann's system theory, media and form are relative to each other and have a contingent relationship. Thus, when certain elements situated in a physical environment are densely connected, here a form comes into being, but when loosely connected, they become a medium. The determination of medium and form depends on this flexible state of connection. Digital code has a more granular characteristic than viscosity, making it unstable in its connection. Because of that, the determination of digital media and form is more variable and fluid than any other medial condition. When images chemically imprinted on surface of celluloid film are transformed into digital information, or cinematic apparatus are replaced by digital devices, it means a physical transition from viscosity to granularity. And this results in the destruction of narrative structure, as well as the interaction of the audience.
