Abstract

The purpose of this study is to define biblical parenting and to identify the elements of parenting competencies that parents should possess in order to do so. The results of this study show that the elements of parenting competencies which parents who are responsible for upbringing must have to do this consist of contents for their relationship with God, their relationship with their child, and their relationship with their neighbor (the world). The task of biblical parenting is to raise each child in the Word of God so that they can respond to it in faith, form a mature personality as a Christian, and further help him or her live a Christian religious life in the world. The task of parenting, therefore, is the nurturing of a biblical life. It is to help children practice the God’s Word with the principle of reality in their life field, to know the revelation given to them through their encounter with God, and to live as light and salt in the world. The parenting skills that parents should have in order to provide biblical parenting prioritize forming a right relationship with God. Given that parenting at home is passed on to children in a way that the lives of parents are transferred to those of children, ultimately, it can be seen that the competencies that parents have are organically integrated to influence parenting. Nevertheless, it is necessary to clarify individual parenting factors because it is also crucial to examine whether parents are fulfilling their roles in a timely manner and to find practical ways to do so in order to achieve the holistic growth of their children. As Cell (1998) states, the role of good parenting in the Bible is not to aim for perfection, but to forgive and love, which is the foundation of faith, to glorify God, and to maintain good relationships with children. However, in complex times of today, it requires not only understanding them, but also understanding the society surrounding them, and thinking about specific ways to build a trusting relationship with them in the given environment. This study aims to examine the general goals of biblical parenting and the factors of parenting competence for this without distinguishing specific targets of children. Nowadays, the role of parents has become more focused on the methodology and skills of parenting and the ultimate goal of educating children for entrance examinations and employment in the world. On the contrary, as it is required to reconsider what parenting refers to in the Bible, the basic concept of general biblical parenting and common parenting competency elements were examined first even though there is a need for considering the differences in emphasis on the competencies required of parents depending on the age group of their children. The role of parents in helping their children grow up as whole persons based on faith-based values should be continuously developed through repeated implementation and training in concrete life situations, and should be accompanied by methodological suggestions that lead to practical help in developing such parenting competencies. Thus, there is a need for future research on the development of assessment tools to measure parenting competencies as well as the design of practical parenting education courses that can improve parents’ competencies based on the elements of biblical parenting competencies.
