Abstract
In the late 1990s, prompted by the East Asian financial crisis, Korea entered the IMF management system and adopted neoliberal policies in earnest. In the aftermath of the crisis, Hong Kong was returned to China and established as a neoliberal exception within China. Japan also fully embraced the neoliberal system after the collapse of its bubble economy, despite the continued failure of economic stimulus plans. During the era of neoliberalism, male characters in East Asian films emerged as neoliberal subjects driven by infinite competition, which became a new paradigm of autonomy, privatization, and marketization. Unlike before, these characters became either more violent or much lonelier and more depressed. However, around the same time, films with a simple narrative structure that lacked overt displays of masculinity or a process of reconstructing masculinity emerged in Korea, Hong Kong, and Japan. These films focused solely on the relationship between two male rivals who formed a strong bond, with the cinematic style being highlighted instead of a simplistic narrative structure that could be seen as childish and boring. Furthermore, male violence was often romanticized in an excessive manner. As a result of the excessive styles portrayed in these films and the lack of myths surrounding the revival and birth of masculinity, complete masculinity became disconnected from the socio-political context and operated solely as a pure symbol of commodities. The homosocial desire of East Asian male characters during the era of neoliberalism was simplified to fit the capitalist accumulation structure of the contemporary context.
