Abstract

This study aims to examine the folk remedies used in Jeju Island, which differ from those practiced on the mainland, to determine its characteristics. We conducted a focus group discussion and in-depth interviews with a chosen sample of Jeju Island residents. Based on the qualitative analysis of the script derived from the focus group discussion and in-depth interviews, we elicited four categories concerning the characteristics of folk remedies in Jeju Island: “prevalent pharmacological folk remedies,” “physical folk remedies incorporating the geological environment,” “daily health management,” and “unique localized psychological folk remedies.”Jeju Islanders use unique folk remedies as well as therapies that are commonly used in other regions of Korea. Further practical scientific research on the potential efficacy and effectiveness of such remedies is required. Additionally, underlying psychological factors and customs pertaining to the use of folk remedies need to be investigated.
