초록

본 연구는 대학 재학 중의 영어능력 또는 영어시험 준비 정도가 졸업 후 초기 노동시장 성과에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지를 살펴보았다. 실증분석 결과, 취업에 대해서는 영어시험 준비 정도나 영어시험 성적이 유의한 영향을 미치지 못하는 것으로 나타났다. 또한 영어가 졸업 후 취업 시까지 걸리는 시간에 미치는 영향도 비슷한 결과를 보였다. 다른 요인들이 통제되지 않을 경우 영어가 취업으로 이행될 확률을 높이는 것으로 나타나지만, 개인적․가구적 특성들이 고려될 경우 영어시험의 취업에 대한 긍정적인 효과가 사라졌다. 공인 영어시험 응시 여부나 영어시험 성적이 첫 일자리에서의 임금에 미치는 영향은 분석 기법에 따라 일부 모델에서는 유의하게 나타났으나, 다른 모델들에서는 통계적인 유의성이 없는 것으로 추정되었다. 이러한 결과들을 종합하면, 영어는 기껏해야 임금에만 긍정적으로 영향을 줄 가능성이 있을 뿐 취업에는 별다른 영향을 미치지 못함으로써 영어에 대한 막대한 투자가 개인이나 국가 전체적으로 볼 때 크게 효율적이지는 않을 수 있다는 것을 시사한다.

Abstract

This study examines how English preparedness during college years is associated with labor market performance after graduation. The results provide no strong evidence that English readiness has a positive impact on the employment possibility. Similarly, English preparedness does not appear to have any significant impact on the duration from graduation to the first job. The effect of English preparedness on the transition to work, which appears to be positive in a regression without any controls, becomes statistically insignificant when individual and household characteristics are considered in the model. On the other hand, the effect of English preparedness or official English exam scores on wages at the first job differed by identification methods that were employed. In some models, the wage effect appears to be positive, while it is statistically insignificant. The finding that the positive effect of English preparedness might be at most limited to wages implies that the substantial investment on English may not be very economically efficient both on individual and the entire economy's perspectives.
