미디어를 인간과 자연의 상호작용 속에서 인간이 자 신의 경험과 인식, 혹은 지식을 서로 나누고 공유하는 매개체라고 정의할 때, 전통사회에서 책은 거의 유일 한 미디어로 기능하였다. 인쇄술이 발전하면서 서적 이 활발하게 보급되었고, 이로 인해 지식의 소수 독점 이 불가능하게 되면서 장구한 기간 동안 인간의 의식 세계를 지배해 온 정전은 마침내 붕괴되기에 이르렀 다. 종교적 가치들의 퇴조와 함께 일상적으로 경험하 는 물리적 세계와 상징의 세계가 분리, 또는 분화되기 시작하였기 때문이다. 그것이 근대 문명 단계에서의 탈신화화 과정으로 이행되다. 특히 성서는 종교의 가르침을 경전화하여 담고 있 는 것이어서, 신성한 것으로 여겨지면서 독특한 예배 가치를 지니기도 했다. 정전의 붕괴는 양면의 칼날과 같은 결과를 가져왔다. 앎의 대중 공유를 통한 문화의 민주주의 실현이 그 한 단면이라고 한다면, 탈신화화 (demystification)를 통한 신성한 것들의 파괴, 속된 가치들의 범람은 또 다른 측면이다. 전통사회에서 인 쇄된 미디어를 통한 정보와 지식의 광범위한 전달의 용이와 폭넓은 대중의 신속한 공유는 현금의 뉴미디 어들과 전혀 다를 바 없는 기능과 역할을 수행하였음 은 주지의 사실이다. 본 논문은 지식과 정보의 대중전달에서 미디어, 특 히 올드미디어가 담당한 역할을 고찰함으로써 향후 가일층 심화할 지식정보화 문명과 그 미래의 일단을 가늠할 수 있는 계기를 마련하고자 한다. 아울러, 본 논문은 현 단계 문화의 한 양태를 살펴볼 수 있는 인 문학적 주제를 대상으로 한 까닭에, 보다 심층적인 논 의를 위해 2회에 걸쳐 나누어 싣기로 한다.
Abstract
If we can define media as those which make human beings exchanging information, knowledge, and experiences in the interrelation of nature and man, books were worked as unique medium in old society. With printing developed, books dispersing widely, and, as a result, knowledge shared, the codex that had dominated on human conscience has eventually been collapsed. It was because of division of world of material and that of symbol. Especially Bible had a kind of cult value(Kultwert) regarding it had the divine. The collapse of the codex brought a dilemma to modern world. On the one hand it gave the socalled cultural democracy to share information and knowledge widely and, on the other hand, resulted in demystification which removed the mystery from them. Nowadays so-called e-books based on the technology of connecting nodes and the means of hypertext are widely accepted as a ‘new codex.’This thesis aims at an introductory survey on changed cultural environments and collapse of the old codex and emergence of new codex in our digitalized society. The present paper is a part, and another part of the paper will be shown on the continuing volume for further discussion.
