Abstract
Unlike the tactile sensation felt by skin, the haptic sensation is felt by whole body, and unlike the optical sensation related to the function of seeing with the eyes, it refers to the function of touching with the eyes. Since the advent of new media art which uses various interfaces, the discussions on the haptic sensation are actively taking place. Especially, Hansen pays attention to the changed role of the body in the digital media environment and explains that new media art offers the experience of strengthening the activity of affection through the exercise of synesthesia that combines visual and tactile sensation. Hansen’s argument is persuasive in that it explains the significance of the haptic sensation exercised in the experience of digital images as activating the body’s natural ability. He supposes that the haptic sensation can be exercised more prominently in the experience of digital images than of analog images. However, his argument is valid only in terms of viewing analog images as fixed records. Deleuze, who sees the world as a relationship of dynamic forces, newly proposes the ontology of analog images, focusing on painting. From his point of view, painting seems to be a fixed record because the conflicting movements of fluid forces are in a tight balance with each other. The haptic plane constructed in painting that makes the invisible forces visible, leads the viewer to execute the vision to its limit and discovers the function of touching of the eyes. Thus, I argues that the haptic sensation can be exercised in both analog and digital images, and although there are differences in specific aspects of ex- ercise, they can activate the human body’s natural ability.
