Abstract
Portraits stem from self-retrospect and interest. Portraits have been the subject of continued interest of painters, producing many different types of portraits employing multiple techniques and expression mechanisms. Portraits are also the ideal medium in expressing not only the socio-characteristics of the time but also the personal psychological state of the individual. Therefore, painters have continuously exhibited themselves using different expression mechanism through portraits to the audience. Generally, there is a discrepancy between the “I” viewed from a first person perspective and “I” viewed by the third person perspective. To this end, painters have introduced different expression techniques chaptering these differences in “I,” paying attention to the evolving image of oneself. The most distinct representation of these differences can be witnessed in the German Expressionist paintings. During the post World War I era, many Germans began paying attention to the inner self, acknowledging the increasing level of uncertainties, both on personal and social level. Among the many expressionist painters, Fransis Bacon (1909-1992) exemplified his inner feelings while expressing himself through different portraits. Furthermore, he continued to employ portraits in expressing the cold dismal realities faced by himself and other Germans after the defeat in World War II. During these endeavors, Bacon, rather than relying on the reality, he employed a technique which transformed and magnified the feelings, showing a greater level of impact than the reality itself. Therefore, this research will focus on analyzing and comparing the works of Francis Bacon and my works, which too originated from the question of identifying personal identities in ever changing new environment.
