Abstract
Human hands and physical movement are the extensions of the thought. This movement or extension of the thought appear when the artist creates the work. Through the results of the production, we can see the thoughts or the philosophy of the artist. This movement can be compared to those of teachers and how they choose to express their thoughts through their movements (actions) when teaching their disciples. Therefore, this act is the direct expression and consistent with the principles of 불입문자 burip munja (不立文字: language or character does not ahead Zen). Expressing thoughts or the state of mind is shown in different methods throughout the art realm. One of its methods can be shown through a “dripping” naturally shed the liquid. This method is spilling paint on a wood or canvas using a brush on a large piece of wood or canvas which can be seen through the works of Jack Pollock (1912-1956). Consciously or unconsciously, Jackson Pollock’s drip makes the natural curve rather than a straight line which is aligned with the movement of the artist’s body. We can also see the drip method in the installation-sculpture of Onishi Yasuaki (1979-). Not on a canvas but in space, the hundreds of lines produced by hot glue flows created by the drip methods are not made by the movement from the body, but from an liquid adhesive falling from the ceiling and formed by gravity. By the working methods of the two artists who work creating numerous lines in continually repetitive actions, we can find the insight and no-thinking (無想) ideas which are components of meditation. Actions of the artist sometime reflect the look of mortification in the monk. In the works of Jackson Pollock's <Number 14 (Gray)> and Onishi Yasuaki’s <Reverse of Volume>, we find a common grid that is created by the use of the combination of horizontals and verticals. The grid represents balance and harmony like the movement of yin and yang. Therefore where there is balance and harmony, there is also the space of meditation. Meditation is finding the serene, natural state of mind. The natural phenomenon, zen (禪), is the result of a free mind and a pure heart. The thoughts, dreams, philosophy, etc, is represented through artist’s work. Through these works and exhibition of their natural minds, the mind and artists and audiences connect with each other.
