Abstract

In demand of the times where ‘cultural nation’ aspires through commercialization and industrialization of culture, cultural products maximize traditional culture and such of that nation’s intrinsic part and increase competitiveness. In such a time period, this research focused on the pattern design of a necktie based on the motif of the Silla’s clay figurine. It was found that Silla prayed for fertility and abundance through the image of sex, which is the symbol of productivity of the Silla’s clay figurine, and through figures that symbolize transportation. It was found through historical, social, and cultural contemplation that they expressed their view of the afterlife pursuing the perpetuity of life after death. It created a necktie pattern design based on such clay figurine’s motif with repeated pattern development. First, Chapter II looked into the history, meaning, and essentiality of the Silla clay figurine. That is to say, it discussed the aspects of the origin of the Silla clay figurine set to be in primitive belief, before the introduction of Buddhism, and later classified the formative features of clay figurine as external and internal. It segmented the intrinsic organic and folksy features into ‘exaggeration and transformation’, ‘beauty of abstract’, ‘realistic expression of sex’, ‘planarizing a solid figure’, ‘vividness’, ‘beauty of symmetry’, ‘complexity’, ‘art of humor’, ‘beauty of randomness’, ‘beauty of irregularity’, and ‘beauty of maltreatment’. Chapter III suggested designing such clay figurine image into modern textile design by using a proper pattern development method. Ultimately it suggested the development and commercialization of the necktie design by utilizing traditional images as an element of modern fashion. This study states that the clay figurine’s features and value are immense for our cultural heritage through general contemplation of the Silla’s clay figurine.
