Abstract

This thesis introduces Sunnam Jo’s song ‘Jasik Sohwega’ and approaches the features, reflected in this material, of March 1 Independence Movement in Jangyu, Gimhae focusing on the lyrics Jasik Sohwega by Sunnam Jo. The author, mother of a leading activist Sungtae Kim, records some heart-deep background stories of the ‘movement’ through the genre of home ballad, praising her son’s positive role in the campaign. This paper confirms that Beomdungpo, besides Mugye-ri, was an important spot of the movement. It is made clear that the place also served as another spot enduring civil discords caused by misunderstandings and tensions among its residents, and that such ill feelings have been settled with the broadcasting and memorial ceremonies of the leading activists. The material shows that some of participants actively joined the ‘campaign’ in the act of subjective practice armed with historical awareness and strong enthusiasm for national independence and pride. It was a great driving force for the village-level organizational activities in which all its members unanimously took part regardless of age and gender. This thesis offers a consultation whether there have been differences in the history of independence movement as a future on-spot history and the orientation as well as the initiative of the campaign in local units, and how much the role of women as supporters or participants has been examined. In sum, the significance of this study lies in providing the basic materials for the future historical studies in this field.
