Abstract
The purpose of this study is to describe and interpret the life course of the aged with the socioeconomic change in a village of an island, i.e. Yoeseodo, Wando County. Generally speaks, modernization is the major transformation of recent history, especially in the economic history of Korea. Although depressed prestige of the elderly people is associated with industrializing societies, the socioeconomic situation or system appear to support and sustain the prestige for the aged in a fishing village. So, instead of focusing upon the modern phenomenon of retirement, social dependency or isolation in old age, this study describes the inexorable process by which the status of older people has been defined at lower level in the course of the industrialization. With the life course perspective, here aging individuals or cohorts are examined as one phase of the entire lifetime and seen as shaped by historical, social, economic and environmental factors that occur at earlier ages.
