조르주 바타유 Georges Bataille에게 형태도 형식도 없는 ‘신성’(神聖)은 인간 고유의 성적(性的) 몰두에 잠재된 동물적인 본성이 배척되지 않고 고스란히 남아 있는 신비의 상태이다. 바타유는 에로티즘 érotisme이란 바로 이러한 신성의 초월적 경험을 통해, 그리고 ‘노동의 세계’가 건립한 금기를 위반하며 가능해진다고 말한다. 에로티즘 이론은 자연의 원형에 다가가려는 일종의 ‘부정(否定)의 유물론’, ‘초월의 유물론’으로서, 혐오와 외설에 대한 배제와 끌림이라는 모순적 양립을 인정하면서 시작되며, 죽음까지 인정하는 삶의 총체성 안에서 인간을 탐색한다. 이 과정에서 바타유는 보편적 금기의 목록 중, 배설물에 대한 인간만의 독특한 혐오감을 성행위의 수치심에 긴밀히 연결하고, 이를 토대로 인간의 ‘환원적 세계’를 비판적으로 통찰한다. 한편, 바타유의 에로티즘 이론은 현대 그로테스크 이론과 상당 부분에 걸쳐 내용적, 미학적 유사점을 가진다. 바타유의 에로티즘을 자신의 미학적 도구로 삼는 현대미술가 중에 특히 폴 매카시 Paul McCarthy는 고도의 음란성과 분변학적 패러디를 통해 인간의 총체적 위상을 ‘그로테스크 리얼리즘’ 차원에서 표상하는데, 그의 비디오-퍼포먼스가 보여주는 위반적이고 억압적인 불쾌는 ‘에로-그로 몸’의 정치학을 통해 우리를 인간의 내재적 삶 속으로 인도한다.
Abstract
To Georges Bataille, “sacred,” which exists without any shape or form, indicates a mysterious state where animal instinct, which is latent in the sexual absorption unique to humans, remains intact without being excluded. According to him, it is this transcendental experience of the sacred and a violation of the taboo established by “a world of labor” that makes érotisme possible. The theory of érotisme, as a type of “materialism of transcendence” as well as the “materialism of negation,” begins by recognizing a contradictory coexistence of the exclusion of and attraction to disgust and obscenity, and explores humans within the realm of the totality of life acknowledging death. In the course of this, Bataille closely connects the disgust to excreta from the list of universal taboos, which is unique to humans, with shame from engaging in sexual intercourse, based on which he sees through “a reductive world” of humans with a critical view. On the other hand, the theory of érotisme by Bataille shares considerable similarities to the theory of the grotesque today in terms of substances and aesthetics. Of the contemporary artists who have adopted érotisme by Bataille as an aesthetic tool, Paul McCarthy presents the general status of humans through a high degree of obscenity and the scatological parodies in the scope of such “grotesque realism.” The violative and oppressive displeasure displayed in his video-performances.
