Abstract

Ju Yo-Han's poetry have a dual tendency that divided into the Narrative poetry and the Folk poetry, Sijo. Form the beginning to the end of his composition of poems, Three kinds of tendencies -① The category of the narrative poetry , evaluated as opened the new era of the Korean modern poetry, ② the category of the folk poetry, represented by , ③ The category of Sijo represented by 「Bongsunwha」the collection of poems- are continuously coexisted in his poetry. Considering his historical meaning as the pioneer of the Korean modern poetry, the duality of his poetry neglected by the researchers. Actually his historical influences are focused on the establishment of the modern poetry. But through his duality, we could confirm the another aspect of his poetry and the general characteristics of the intellectuals in the colonial period. The modern poetry has the certain unique narration formscalling, inviting sentence, ordering form, future tense. These kinds of narrations are frequently shown in his poetry, it could be defined as a 'sentence pattern'. Through the repeated sentence pattern, we could find the role of literature in the social historical veins of the period the modern enlightenment. The meaning class of the poetry-Enlightenment- is definitely connected with the particular expression class, there could realize the definite relation between the form and substance of literature, the '‘signifie' and 'signifiant' of language. It shows that the linguistic characteristic of the literal work are intimately connected with the social and historical situations. The duty of the colonial intellectuals is the enlightenment of the people. In his sentence pattern selected for the enlightenment, he hided the righteous ruling logic of the upper and lower class-the granting and the granted. The sentence pattern of the enlightenment -hiding the power stationing between the ordering(=ruling) and the ordered(ruled)- proves that the social power relations are reflected on the sentence pattern. The power stationing between Japan and Chosun is applicated to the ideology of the enlightenment between the intellectuals and the people. Pragmatics abstract the meanings above the language which is written by the vein of the narration. His enlightening sentences are reflected the power system of the society. As 'You'-the object of 'I'- are vanished in the vein of uncommunicated and inequally related 'I and You', the duality of 'I'-subject is also eliminated. After the collapsing of the absolute idea-enlightenment, he wrote Sijo. His failure in the establishing the relation between subject and object('I and You') is not only his limitations but the that of the colonial intellectuals. Escaping from the ideologic ressure of the enlightening period, Finding a true individual, and Responding to the times through modern ego are charged by the next generation. The uncommunicating and disuniting of the two forms have something in common with our historical limitation that we have to compulsorily export the distorted modernity-Colony. He revealed his duality by writing the modern narrative poetry and creating the traditional folk poetry and Sijo. It is an important and historical example of confrontation and unification between the modernity and the tradition. Ju Yo-Han’ s meaning in the history of literature is laid on showing the example of how did the sentence pattern of the enlightenment are operated and the pursuing and failing in modern mode revealed by the process of the dual writing.
