In this study, the novels of the Korean postwar refuge life are discussed focusing on the Kim Yi-seok’s novels embodied his refugee life during the Korean War. As we know, for the Korean War is in gear with the division status of the Korean peninsula, it is said that it is a civil war. This status brings to an ideological division between peoples essentially. As the Korean war breaks out under the situation of forcing an either-or ideological choice, though, more or less, the positive choice is possible, it brings the individual survival to a crisis. Naturally, it can be said that the works dealing with the division problems as well as an individual tragedies caused by the division have 'an archetype' of a contemporary life. Especially, Kim Yi-seok writes a psychological novel grown up on the background of Pyongyang mainly. However, after the Liberation of Korea, he plays a role in sociological literary circles under the government of the North Korea. After coming from North Korea in the January 1st Retreat, he belongs to the literary circle of the South Korea. But he is one of the nonmainstreamers, and so he deals with the common peoples' lives with wounded scars left by the division deeply engraved in his works. It is the witness, on the spot, of the infernal circumstances caused by bombing attacks for Pyongyang by the United States Air Force just after the Korean War, as well as his experiences in the North Korea that he is able to write with this prospects. And the other reason why he has such a prospect is that he experiences the hardships, starving, a brutal cold in winter, a sense of alienation as a refugee in Daegu, after coming from North Korea with his family left behind. That’s just because he undergoes more severely the shift in his own point of view of writing in the future than other novelist. Kim Yi-seok’s refuge life novels, Dongmyun, Jigabudae, are able to be compared with the works of the new generation group of writers dealing with the postwar situations. And they are able to be compared with Hwang Sun-won’s or Kin Dong-lee’s refuge life novels who come from the North Korea just after the Liberation, raise their careers in Seoul. The literary intention of the former group is in their own sentiment on the basis of the War itself or the postwar situations differing from the writers of the older generation. On the other hand, the latter group becomes much interested in just people’s living, that is, the way of life in the course of the War. Especially, in the refuge novels, by dealing with these problems more deeply, they have some advantages of showing the refugees' lives vividly in a place of refuge. More than anything else, it’s because these works can show clearly how important a food, a bed, a clothing are. Also, it’san author’s confession on more fundamental thing, that is the biological condition of human life than the frustration of the aspirations and hopes of the postwar generation. On account of this, it is certain that Kim Yi-seok’s novels are worth researching in the contexts of the postwar literature. Moreover, the research on these works is supposed to be a complementary work on the main-tendency of putting more weight on the research of the new generation's works in the history of novel in the 1950's.
