Abstract
This thesis aims to search for aesthetics of death and reaction of the public politics. In my thesis, I focus on the television drama, Queen Myeong-Seong and the theory about the union of Japan and Chosun(내선일체론) in Lee Kwang-su's essays. Despite of the temporal distance, in two works individuals are included in the whole society through the death. While Queen Myeong-Seong consists the commemoration of Han-nation by fragile corporeal representation, Lee Kwang-su insists that conscription system is the most conspicuous sign to show Japanization of Chosun people. In this course, death is divided into two parts; memorable death and non-memorable death. These two deaths engender hierarchy of first people and second people. Queen Myeong-Seong is described as oppressed national sacrifice and also image of korean traditional women symbolizing wife's virtue and mother's devoted sacrifice. It represents hierarchization of death and inequality of gender politics. While man is evaluated by achievement, she oscillates between two extremity of excessive praise and devaluation according to external view. While Queen Myeong-Seong stimulates the closed, circular narcissism of the nation by defined as a sufferer, Lee Kwang-su escapes from bondage of second people by asserting voluntary death of individuals. So he emphasizes that colonized Chosun people must be volunteers of conscription system to be first Japan people. Moreover he demands to execute the same system as Japan's. This kind of Japanization erases individuals and results in subjection of individuals to nation-state, a single channel. Aesthetics of death takes on this paradox.
