본 논문은 근대 초기에 찬송가가 국문 텍스트로 번역되는 과정을 살피면서, 근대 초기 시 양식의 변화와 생성에는 서구 기독교 문화의 음악 양식이 매개되어 있었다는 사실을 발견하였다. 찬송가 가사의 번역 과정은 악곡의 1음표 당(當) 한국어 글자 하나씩, 철저하게 1:1로 대응시키는 자수 대응(字數對應) 방식으로 이루어졌다. 찬송가 음악의 곡조에 조선어의 자수(字數)를 맞추는 것이 선교사들의 찬송가 번역 작업이었다. 그러므로 한국 시가 율격의 본래의 고유한 성질이라 할 수 있을 음량(音量, mora)으로 실현되는 음보율의 전통을 살리는 일은 쉬운 일이 아니었다. 이에 따라 한국 시가의 전통적인 율격이었던 4음4보격의 음보율은 번역된 찬송가의 가사와 같은 다양한 음수율로 된 문자 텍스트에 점차 익숙하게 노출되기 시작하였다. 찬송가 가사는 각 악절마다 반복적으로 똑같은 자수로 번역됨으로써 국문 시가의 텍스트는 이에 따라 각연마다 동일한 자수 형태로 음수율을 실현하는 새로운 양식들이 나타나게 되었다.. 어떤 언어권의 문화가 다른 문화권의 언어로 옮겨질 때 거기에는 늘 어떤 형태로든 번역이라는 작업이 개입한다. 번역의 관점에서는 문자 텍스트에 나타난 언어의 기록을 통해 언어권의 변동에 따른 문화적 접합에 대한 추적을 가능케 한다. 국문 시가사상의 음보율적 전통이 음수율로 전환되면서 새로운 근대적 시 양식을 산출하게 되는 과정은 이처럼 전통의 접합이냐 서구로부터의 이식(transplantation)이냐 하는 대립항이 아니라 다양한 외래 문화로부터의 번역(translation)이라는 관점에 의해서 비로소 가능해진다.
Abstract
This article is for discovering that Western Christian mode of Music played an important role as a mediation for the birth of early modern Korean poetic mode by examining many Western hymns' translation into Korean. The Missionaries at that time used to translate hymns by way of making syllables correspondent to their tune. In this process, a tetra－metre of foot, as it were, the traditional Korean rhythm, was often transformed into a 8·6 syllabic－metre. As the words of a Western hymn was translated into the same syllables by period, each paragraph of a Korean text came to have the same syllables. This process not only caused the change of a traditional metre－of－foot into syllabic－metre but also invented a new－form of poetry which has been regarded as the first and foremost modern form in Korean poetry. This nonliterary approach considering the element of Music then recorded in early poetic texts, owes to the new terms of focusing on the aspects of translation from the diverse foreign cultures, not on the binary contrast between a transformation of tradition and a transplantation from the West.
