Abstract
This paper seeks to understand Greek Time(Han Gang, 2011) as a narrative that allegorizes the depth of the subject’s desire to be completely bonded with the other. The theoretical basis for this theory of desire is post-structuralist linguistics, and psychoanalysis in the field of depth psychology. The former seeks to analyze the situation in which the subject’s language can encounter the other’s language by dismantling self-identity, while the latter seeks to analyze the situation in which the unconscious impulse of the depth of consciousness can internalize the other’s desire. Therefore, this paper will be able to reveal that the narrative of Greek Time, which represents the perfect bonding between the subject and the other, is a narrative that vividly and completely allegorizes the process of this bonding. The literary world of Han Gang, which is relatively well known to the contemporary public, can be analyzed in various detailed themes, but ultimately asks how and to what extent humans can bond in suffering. In the writer’s arduous journey seeking the answer to this, Greek Time in particular addresses this question by deeply looking into humans as beings who signify the other called the world. In other words, the subject and the other finally become completely bonded in suffering because they share the special linguistic signifier called Greek. This is why this paper explores the novel as an allegory of the process in which the subject completely internalizes the other’s desire and bonds with the other by encountering the signifier of the other called Greek. In the main text, we will first analyze the meaning of “Greek Time”, which allegorizes the life drive that encounters the other. This will clearly reveal the situation in which the language of the subject called “she” becomes aware of and abhors the narrow subjectivity embodied in spoken language, leading to aphasia, and the situation in which it encounters the language of the other through Greek, a written language that embodies the signifier that can dismantle it. Second, it will analyze the meaning of “Greek Time”, which allegorizes the death drive that allows for complete bonding with the other. This will clearly show the situation in which the two subjects, “she” and “he”, embrace the death drive of he other through Greek, which symbolizes the dead language of the other, and become completely bonded with each other in the midst of the pain of aphasia and blindness. Through this, this paper will provide insight into the depth of human desire for complete bonding that Greek Time allegorizes with the narrative full of vivid symbols and the detailed discourse on it.
