Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to show the fact that there existed a subculture of male homosexuality in 18th century London and that the male homosexuals called ‘molly’ were separated and persecuted as ‘Others’. Chapter II investigates the pre-history of ‘molly’. There were included the bisexuality of the ‘rakers’ and the effeminacy of the ‘fops’. Chapter III reconstructs the sad life of ‘molly’ as the third gender. It emphasizes that ‘molly’ was recognized as a new type of human being to be separated. Chapter IV insists that this recognition of ‘molly’ as ‘Other’ is to be interpreted in the light of the changing view of masculinity. It suggests the primary reasons of that change were the rise of the bourgeois family and of the strong state in 18th century Britain.
