한국 사회과학계의 연구협업에 대한 시론적 탐색 - 한국사회과학연구(SSK)지원사업 참여 연구자들을 중심으로

초록

분석적 지식보다는 종합적 지식을 요구하는 융합과 통섭의 시대가 도래함에따라 근대적 질서의 산물인 분과학문 체제의 한계를 극복하기 위한 노력이 가시화되고 있다. 그럼에도 칸막이주의 또는 전공불가침 조약 등으로까지 표현되는 한국사회과학계의 분과학문 간 장벽은 여전히 견고하고, 그 간극은 넓다. 이와 같은문제의식에서 발원한 한국사회과학연구(SSK)지원사업은 한국 사회과학계의 지식생산체제 변화와 학제간 연구의 공진화 가능성을 타진해 볼 수 있다는 점에서 각별한 주목의 대상이다. 이 논문은 2010년 선정 연구팀의 연구실적 목록에 기재된논문을 대상으로 연구협업의 성과 분석 및 학술적·정책적 함의 도출을 시도한다. 주요 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 한국 사회과학계에서 연구협업의 비중이 점차 증가하고 있음이 확인되었다. 둘째, 연구협업의 정도와 수위를 결정하는 역할분담 체계가 참여하는 연구자들의 연령 또는 연구팀 내 지위에 따라 차별화되는방식으로 형성되어 있음이 확인되었고, 연구협업의 증가 추세와 맞물려 이러한 역할분담 체계에 변화의 징후가 나타나고 있음도 감지되었다. 셋째, 전공과 무관하게 사회과학 전체에서 공저 비율이 증가하고 있음에도 불구하고, 분과학문의 전통과 특성에 따라 연구협업의 양태가 다르게 나타나고 있음도 밝혀졌다. 넷째, 분과학문간 벽이 높고 소통이 부재한 한국 사회과학계의 현실에서 연구협업을 위한 사려 깊은 정책수단의 투입과 이를 지원하는 효과적인 촉진자의 존재가 연구협업의 활성화와 확산에 적지 않은 기여를 하고 있음을 알 수 있었다.

Abstract

As the age of convergence ‒ which requires comprehensive rather thananalytic knowledge ‒ emerges, it is urgently needed to explore alternatives to thestructure of academic disciplines. Although interdisciplinary (or collaborative)research has been suggested as an alternative to the academic disciplinary system,disciplinary boundaries in Korean social sciences, often characterized aspartitionism or nonaggression treaty, are still sturdy, and gaps between disciplinesare wide. In this context, patterns of collaborative research triggered by recentsupport from the Social Science Korea (SSK) provide important opportunities toassess the changes of knowledge production in Korean social sciences. After the comprehensive review of previous literature on collaborativeresearch, this paper surveys the concept of collaborative research, backgroundof spread and benefits, patterns and effects, and determinants of promotion andobstacle. Then, it overviews initiation process as well as objectives, features, anddirection for supports and current status of implementation of the SSK, whichis closely associated with the recent growth of research collaboration amongsocial scientists in Korea. And this study finds that the primary goals of the SSKare to spread the culture of collaborative research and to support variousnetworking activities. The analyses of collaborative research by using the list of publications, reported as research achievement by the SSK teams awarded in 2010, indicatedthat the proportion of collaborative research has gradually increased. Also theresult revealed that division of labor is structured through age of the researcheror status in the research team. In addition, as collaborative research increases, itappears that the existing system of division of labor is likely to change. Finally,although the proportion of collaborative research is increasing regardless ofsubdisciplines in social science as a whole, there are substantial variations in thepatterns of collaboration according to the tradition or feature of thesubdiscipline. These changes in social scientists might be related to the SSK project thatis increasing supports for research collaboration. These results imply thatpolitical supports for research collaboration and its facilitators are likely tobecome even more important in Korean society where academic disciplinaryboundaries are strictly formalized.
