Abstract

The article investigates the debates on the historical character of the British Industrial Revolution (BIR) in the long-run process of the transition to the Modern Age and seeks some implications. The article especially pays attention firstly to the debates between the so-called standard or traditional view and revisionist view of the BIR on the one hand, and secondly to the debates between revisionism and the efforts to reinstate the traditional view of the BIR. The standard view in the article includes Walt Rostow, Phyllis Deane and David Landes, reserving Marxist literature. Revisionism is represented by Nicholas Crafts, while the effort to reinstate the traditional view is primarily the works by Stephen Broadberry. The article reviews the debates and draws some implications for further research on the BIR in global and comparative historical perspective.
