Abstract

Since 2020, various discourses on fairness and social justice have intersected in Korean society. In this process, fairness emerges as a discourse that encompasses various dimensions of our society, such as class, gender, and generation, and causes collective social conflict. In the discourse of fairness, the mass media affects the construction of the discourse on ‘fair value’ in our society and the partisanship and emotional dynamics that are the basis of social conflict. This article analyzes the media discourse dealing with fairness by combining fear, anger, and partisanship. Agenda-setting in different ways according to the partisan frame of the mass media, and in the process, fear and anger emotions occur in different ways. For example, conservative media tend to report individual private freedom and social order based on fair value, but progressive media tend to frame fair value around inequality and discrimination agendas. In addition, according to the media’s report frame on the case, anger and fear are expressed differently for the same event. Based on these results, researchers discuss the role of media and emotions as the basis for democratic communication.
