Abstract
Internet shopping malls have used brand popularity as an advertising cue (e.g., No. 1 in sales). It is based on the assumption that consumers have more intention to purchase brands with popularity claims since they perceive that popularity claims result from superior quality. However, little research has focused on how brand popularity influences quality perception and/or purchase intention. Furthermore, past research has been conducted mainly in the context of offline shopping, and the direction and size of brand popularity effects are mixed. This research presents the results of an experiment with 102 participants in 20s by professional marketing research company. It is conducted with a capsule coffee espresso machine as a stimuli product to show how brand popularity as advertising cue affects quality perception and purchase intention in the context of Internet shopping. The findings of analyses show that "No.1 in sales" advertising cue has more effect on perceived brand popularity than "Hit product" cue. It is also found that brand popularity has a direct effect on purchase intention as well as indirect influence on it through perceived quality. Based on the findings, the implications and limitations of this research are discussed.
