Educational Implications for the Building of Eucharistic Prayer as the Stories of Faith Formation

The purpose of this study is to find educational implications for the building of the eucharistic prayer as the stories of faith formation with attention to the formative characteristics of liturgy in the Presbyterian Church of Korea through critical analysis of the educational contexts of the Eucharist. According to the phase of Lex Orandi Lex Credendi, the appropriate practices of liturgical narratives help congregation members shape and form their faith in terms of identity, value, and life-style as God’s people. Among many liturgical narratives, the eucharistic prayer has been understood as one of core Christian narratives including creation, fall, salvation, restoration, and the kingdom of God in the context of worship. However, it is sad that eucharistic prayer is neither given adequate attention to its significance as a story which forms congregation members’ faith nor celebrated appropriately in Korean church. With this in mind, this study (1) identifies narrative theology and main issues by examining representative narrative theology scholars, (2) finds the educational rationales for the reconceptualization of eucharistic prayer by analyzing current liturgical text of eucharistic prayer in the view of Anne Wimberly’s story-linking and Thomas Groome’s shared praxis, and (3) finds educational implications for the building of eucharistic prayer as stories for the faith formation at the table of the Eucharist. I hope that this work will help congregation members participate in eucharistic prayer as ongoing faith-formative stories fully, actively, and consciously rather than as static, repetitive, and formal stories in the past.
