Abstract
Currently, hyper-innovation of digital technology and the convergence of interactive media have been mass procreated media contents. Afreeca TV, the representative interactive media in Korea, allows users to interact with BJ (Broadcasting Jockey). This is a private broadcasting system which aid to interact with BJ through a chat while watching the contents from personal broadcasting. The viewers could financially support the host with “star balloon” (cyber money). In particular, viewers are voluntarily purchasing a “star balloon” and offering it to BJ, although it is not obligatory to pay the necessary fees for watching. Then, “why do viewers spend money while watching free contents offered by private internet broadcasting jockey?” Current study focuses to find the answer for this question. This study refers to existing literature to identify the motivation for cyber money purchase which is a voluntary consumption item. Using in-depth interviews with 21 Afreeca TV viewers, we derived and conceptualized the type of consumption motive for the cyber money “star ballon“. This study attempts to conceptualize the motivation of voluntary consumption and widen the understanding of interactive media through the qualitative study of consumers purchasing ”star balloon“.
