Abstract
The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 12(4), 143-165. The aim of our study consists in the pursuit of the major senses which 'process' can have and the consequence of temporal operator's function as aspectual determiners. Distinct from the tense, 'aspect' is a grammatical category focusing on process. Process can be denoted inconsistently by extra-linguistic actions, verbs, and temporal operators. We have surveyed how a typology of the process has been achieved through the classification of the actions by Brunot and Vendler's quadripartite classification of the verbs. The features most significant for their classification are <±dynamism>, <±closed>, and <±momentary>. The roles played by temporal operators have to be examined in detail, because the ultimate sense at the phrase level results from their combination with the verbs. We have noted that the classification of the verbs is useful for the selection, as well as their interpretation, between the auxiliaries 'être' and 'avoir' for the Perfect construction in French. While the distinction of transitional / non-transitional situations referred to by verbs is possible through such a classification, this distinction is meaningful concerning the inference of the phrases with all kinds of aspects including the Perfect aspect. We have also showed that the semantic values of the iterative process are 'habit', 'attribution of property' and 'argumentation', and that some of the functions of the durative process are to describe past events or figures, and to act as a theme or topic in relation to predication of these objects.
