Abstract
The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 12(4), 17-36. This paper examines the pseudogapping construction in English and argues against the V-movement analysis given by Lasnik (1995). In a series of papers, Lasnik (1995, 1999c, 2001, 2002) has argued that V in English usually undergoes overt movement to satisfy the strong feature on the upper V but remains in situ without checking such a feature in case of pseudogapping. In the course of this operation he has claimed to have evidence that the object shift and V-movement (head movement) are taking place in the overt syntax before Spell-Out. Chomsky (2000) has, however, proposed that head movement is a PF process rather than a syntactic one. Recently Boeckx and Stjepanović (2001) has also assumed that the head movement takes place after Spell-Out in PF. Following the assumption of Chomsky's (2000) and Boeckx and Stjepanović (2001), I show that V-movement in pseudogapping can be replaced by a PF-deletion account.
