Abstract

Lee, Young-Hern. 2006. Semantic Representations of Adverbials and Their Functional Heads. The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 14(3), 31-50. The purpose of this paper is to explore a device to describe the entailment between the sentences with adverbial and the sentences without adverbials, and the order of adverbials with respect to the their functional heads. Both of subatomic semantics and λ-categorial grammars have some defects in description of entailment and the order of adverbials respectively. As a device of proper semantic representations we combine two semantics into a complex semantics. Especially there was no way to define the order of the adverbials if they have the same syntactic categories. However, we can give the definite order of adverbials or the scope of adverbials by the hierarchy of functional heads of adverbials. For instance, if the adverb "Palli(quickly)" in Korean sometimes represent the celerative aspect and “O-nul(today) tense, then "O-nul(today) comes before "Palli(quickly)" In addition to these, evaluative adverbs go before the evidential adverbs and selectional restriction between adverbials and verbs can be formalized by the functional heads.
