Abstract
The purpose of this paper is to compare the functions of tough-constructions in English and Korean. The main claims of this paper are as follows. First, we have argued that tough- constructions in English and Korean should not be viewed as a phenomenon of movement, but as involving the semantic and pragmatic functions. Second, we have discussed the functions of tough-constructions in terms of two perspectives in information packaging theory. We have argued that both English and Korean tough-constructions function as the cohesive topicalization device. In addition the uses of tough- constructions are associated with the conversion from thetic judgment sentences to categorial judgement sentences in both languages. Third, it is claimed that the tough-constructions in both languages carry the semantic property of genericity, which tends to be associated with the requirement of homogeneity reflecting personalized experiences. To summarize, tough- constructions in both languages are used for some semantic and pragmatic functions and share many functional characteristics.
