Abstract

The purpose of this study is to understand the income and household consumption expenditure patterns changed before and after COVID-19 to find out the economic impact of COVID-19 on domestic households differently. To this end, the changes in the overall consumption expenditure and the proportion of consumption expenditure by category in 2019-2020 were examined using data from the Korea Labor Panel Survey, and the difference in characteristics by type was analyzed by categorizing households according to the increase and decrease in consumption expenditure in 2020 compared to 2019. In addition, we looked at the influencing factors that determine the type. The main results are as follows. First, financial income and real estate income increased in 2020 compared to 2019. In particular, the increase in transfer income (3.19%) was greater than the earned income (1.51%). On the other hand, unlike income, the overall expenditure remained similar to the previous year. Second, looking at the change in the proportion of consumption expenditure by category, consumption expenditure in areas requiring face-to-face such as public education, congratulatory expenses, donations, and cultural entertainment expenses decreased. Meanwhile, household areas such as daily necessities purchase costs, public transportation costs, and food expenses have increased. In other words, it was confirmed that the pattern of household consumption has changed through a change in the proportion of consumption, rather than a decrease in the overall amount of consumption due to COVID-19. Third, as a result of categorization, it was divided into three groups: ‘spending increase type’, ‘spending retention type’, and ‘spending reduction type’. Each type showed significant differences in income and expenditure as well as social characteristics such as the number of household members and the educational background of the head of the household. In particular, the spending reduction type had a higher proportion of single and two-person households than other types, and showed characteristics of low education and low income. Before and after COVID-19, their earned income, in particular, decreased significantly, but their transfer income rose significantly and received government help. Finally, the factors affecting the classification of types were somewhat different for each type. The factors that differentiate between “spending increase type” and “spending retention type” were the number of household members and the educational background of household owners, and the factors that differentiated “spending retention type” and “spending reduction type” were identified as government subsidies, earned income, household membership, and savings. This study will be meaningful in that it compared before and after COVID-19 and focused on the increase and decrease, and through this, it examined who households were particularly economically hit by COVID-19.
