Abstract
The purpose of this paper lies in analyzing a daughter’s narrative of forgiving her mother in terms of its narrative structure and Korean psychology. Forgiveness is a motivation to reduce the anger, desire for revenge, and urge to retaliate against an offender. To forgive, an offendee can articulate a narrative of the traumatic event by penetrating a perspective into the event and incorporating the event into a current account of self. Her narrative has the features of reframing her view of herself as well as her mother, future-oriented dimension, and the key theme of growth or renewal. In her narrative, her perception of her mother is changed and her accountability is recognized. And possibilities of incoming transformations of herself as well as her mother are welcomed. And her ideals of compassion, empathy, filial loyalty, and sacrifice are pursued. Her narrative was analyzed in terms of Choi’s Korean psychology. An offendee is inflicted by an offender’s heartless behaviors, selfish behaviors without compassion or empathy. The offendee’s typical reaction to the hearless behavior lies in resentment. There are two ways in forgiving the resentment. One is Han, the way how the chagrin and hatred are decreased and sublimated by accepting human interdependence and normalizing the unjust suffering by contemplative attitude. The other is Jung, the way how the chagrin and hatred are evaporated by restoring the Korean ideal interpersonal relationships of a simplehearted compassion and empathy. Her narrative is consisted of forgiveness as a transformation from resentment to compassion and empathy through reconciliation.
