Abstract
Since the 1988 Seoul Summer Olympics, many ‘foreigners’ have come to South Korea to achieve the “Korean dream”. Most of them are migrant workers and a significant portion of them are ‘Asian’ women who married Korean men through commercially motivated “match makers”. It has been reported that their number now exceeds one million. It has caught the attention of many that these people face numerous challenges that are difficult: they range from learning a new language, culture shock, social barriers, racial prejudice, gender discrimination, to xenophobic attitudes, illegal treatment and apathy to work related injuries as well as outright hostility. These challenges are not only formidable, but at the same time seemingly overwhelming as well. Many of them are culturally inscribed in Korean society mixed with unexamined religious perspectives. This paper proposes to show (a) how a Christian church’s multicultural ministry can properly assist individuals, families, and churches as they face these new challenges in their lives and, more importantly, help them better confront them more effectively in a rapidly changing social environment, and (b) how a biblically and theologically conceived cross-cultural ministry may help us clearly define, characterize and assess tasks of the Christian church in Korea in addressing these issues more faithfully. Such approaches will help us conceptualize, implement and evaluate the work (diakonia) of the church. Some of the key issues that are dealt with in this paper are an analysis of the issues/concerns about the state of the international migrant workers in South Korea; a biblical and theological perspective on the ‘migrant community’; opportunities and desirable roles for Christian multi-cultural ministry in South Korea; and some ideas about an effective approach to a multi-cultural ministry for Korean churches. The task for the Korean church, is to effectively serve and follow-up the rapidly growing multi-cultural migrant community, so that they may experience God’s love and live meaningful lives.
