본 연구는 아이리스 머독의 주시 개념이 어떻게 형이상학과 도덕을 결합 하는지, 그리고 기독교 신학이 이러한 철학적 기획에 어떠한 실천적 지혜를 제공하는지를 분석하는 것을 목표로 한다. 인간의 자유와 의지를 강조했던 동시대 철학자들과 달리 머독은 실재를 공정하고 사심 없이 응시하는 주시 의 윤리를 제시하였다. 그는 프로이트의 정신분석학이 기독교의 죄론과 유 사한 인간론, 즉 자기중심적 에너지를 가진 인간 이해를 제시한다고 보았다. 도덕적 결단은 인간의 자기중심성에 영향을 받기에, 일상에서 세계를 탈이 기적으로 보는 욕망의 교육이 윤리에서 결정적으로 중요하고, 그런 면에서 도덕적 기술로서 주시는 세속사회에서 기독교에서 말하는 기도와 비슷한 기능을 한다. 이 같은 제안 이면에는 선에 대한 관조가 도덕적 형성을 이끈 다는 플라톤적인 형이상학이 전제되어 있다. 머독은 초월적 선은 아름다움 을 통해 지각될 수 있다고 보았기에, 도덕철학에서 예술의 역할을 특별히 강조했다. 이러한 머독의 철학은 후기세속사회에서 어떻게 신학과 도덕, 예 술의 관계를 이해할지에 대해 중요한 통찰을 준다.
Abstract
This study aims to explore how Iris Murdoch’s concept of attention combines her metaphysics with moral philosophy. It also attempts to question how Christianity’s practical wisdom influenced her philosophical project within the intellectual context of secularized Europe. Unlike her contemporary philosophers, most of whom conceived of freedom as a fundamental category for their ethics, she suggested an ethics of attention, nearly equating the Christian practice of prayer with seeing ‘something other than oneself’ truly, lovingly and justly. For this, she utilized Plato’s metaphysical idea that the transcendental Good is experienced through our bodily perceptions of beauty. Conclusively speaking, Murdoch offered a unique vision of moral philosophy in which the relationship among theology, ethics, and art can be examined from a refreshing perspective in this post-secular period.
