나사렛교회의 정체성에 대한 종합적 연구

초록

1908년 미국에서 창립된 나사렛교회(Church of the Nazarene)는 164개국에 264만 명이 넘는 성도를 가진, 세계에서 가장 큰 웨슬리안 성결교단이다. 1948년에 시작된 한국 나사렛교회(대한기독교나사렛성결회)는 2만 6천 명 이상의 성도로 이뤄져 있다. 사실 한국 나사렛교회는 한국에서 다른 교단들에 비해 크게 성장하지 못했고, 그 존재와 성격이 한국 기독교인들에게 잘 알려져 있지 않은 편이다. 이 문제의 주요 원인 중 하나가 나사렛교회의 정체성에 대한 한국 나사렛 사람들의 분명한 이해의 부족이라는 것이 지적되어왔다. 오늘날 한국교회는 내부적으로는 교회의 도덕적 타락과 세속화라는 문제를 맞이하고 있고, 외부적으로는 세계화와 생태계 위기와 코로나19의 상황 속에 선교를 위한 세계적 연대를 구축해 나가야 하는 과제를 맞이하고 있다. 따라서 온전 성결을 강조하면서도 민주적 정신과 시스템을 통해 하나의 세계적 선교 공동체를 이루고 있는 나사렛교회는 주목할 만한 모델이라 할 수 있다. 이런 맥락에서 본 연구는 나사렛교회의 정체성을 탐구하고 종합적으로 구성함으로써 자기 정체성에 대한 한국 나사렛 사람들의 이해와 나사렛교회에 대한 한국 기독교인들의 이해에 기여하고자 한다. 이 연구는 교단 정체성의 세 가지 차원을 신학적, 역사적, 실천적 정체성으로 정의하고, 그것들의 내적 구조와 본성을 규명한다. 설정된 정체성 구조에 따라 나사렛교회의 세 가지 정체성은 각각 구성되어 하나의 삼차원적 정체성으로 종합된다.

Abstract

The Church of the Nazarene, founded in the United States in 1908, is the world’s largest Wesleyan-Holiness denomination, with more than 2.64 million members in 164 countries. Launched in 1948, the Korean Church of the Nazarene currently has over 26,000 members. In fact, the Korean Nazarene Church has not grown significantly compared to other denominations in Korea, and its existence and character are not yet well known to Korean Christians. It has been pointed out that one of the main causes of this problem is that Korean Nazarenes do not have a clear understanding of the identity of the Church of the Nazarene. Today, the Korean church is facing the problem of moral corruption and secularization of the church internally, and externally facing the task of building global solidarity for missions in the context of globalization, ecological crisis, and COVID-19. Accordingly, the Church of the Nazarene, which emphasizes entire sanctification and forms one global mission community through a democratic spirit and system, can be a remarkable model. In this context, this paper attempts to explore and comprehensively construct the identity of the Church of the Nazarene in order to contribute to the understanding of self-identity by Korean Nazarenes and the understanding of the Church of the Nazarene by Korean Christians. This study defines the three dimensions of denominational identity as theological identity, historical identity, and practical identity, and illuminates their internal structure and character. Based on the established identity framework, the three identities of the Church of the Nazarene are each constructed to be integrated into one three-dimensional identity.
