본 논문은 틸리히와 뉴비긴이 보여준 타종교에 대한 이해를 종교와 문화의 관계 안에서 전망해 보고, 아시아의 종교적 상황에서 어떤 태도가 타당한지를 검토한 논문이다. 본 논문은 틸리히가 주장하는 “회심이 아닌 대화”라는 전략 보다는 뉴비긴이 제시한 “대화가 아닌 복음화”라는 전략을 지지한다. 뉴비긴이 제시한 “대화가 아닌 복음화” 전략은 삼위일체론적 전망 아래서 교회의 성례전적 실천을 강조하며, 기독론중심주의적 입장에 입각해서교회가 자신의 이야기를 전하고 그 이야기 안에 살아가며, 교회 밖의 사람들을 그 이야기 안에 초대하는 것이다. 이러한 선교전략이 구현될 때, 제국주의적 선교와 종교 다원주의적 선교가 지양될 수 있다.
Abstract
This article is aiming at understanding two different perspectives of the relationship between Christianity and other religions suggested by Paul Tillich and Lesslie Newbigin, and moreover rethinking over the proper attitude toward other religions in the Asian religious context. Paul Tillich proposed the attitude of “not conversion but dialogue” with other religions. This article suggests that Tillich’s attitude toward other religions reveal the political policy of the USA: No Racism & No Discrimination. On the contrary, Lesslie Newbigin proposed the model of “not dialogue but evangelization.” From the religious context of the India, Newbigin rejected the imperial and religious pluralistic approach to Christian mission. Rather, Newbigin used “telling the story” as the tool for evangelization from the Trinitarian perspective. This methodology focuses on the Church and Sacrament, living in the story and inviting other people into this story.
