Abstract
This article examined the production of textile during the Old Joseon period. This archaeological site is called the Machengzi culture, located in the cave upstream of the Taizihe river in eastern Liaoning province. This culture was formed into several caves and many tombs in the Bronze Age. Most of the bodies were single burial and only a few were buried together(e.g. an adult women and a child). The abundant artifacts that they used such as many remains, hemp textile fragments and textile tools provide direct archaeological evidence of textile culture and production in the Old Joseon. The preserved spindle whorls were made of stone and fired clay. Most of the stone whorls were discoid shape but the clay whorls had been variously existed without any special flow such as change or decline throughout the Bronze Age. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate the relationship between the various types of yarn production and the shape of the whorls. It probably means that the shape of the whorls produces different kinds of yarns due to the speed of spinning. There are four points of view to interpret this culture such as thread production, producer, weaving techniques and cognitive abilities. The techniques of making prehistory textile tools are the clues to see how textile production activities had been done, spatial cognitive abilities, numerical concepts, knowledge acquisition and delivery. The stripe pattern of whorls may have the functions as required for textile production (e.g. the speed of rotation or plying processes) and roles. In other words, it seems to have played a simple and continuous way of transferring and acquiring various textile production technologies with symbols rather than complicated characters.
