Abstract

This study traces the types and introduction routes of newly emerging iron artifacts in the Yeongnam region during the Late Proto–Three Kingdoms period, and examines the patterns and significance of changes in iron culture. Around the mid to late 2nd century, new types of iron implements that had not been used in the earlier wooden–coffin society appeared in the Yeongnam region. This change resulted from the expansion of interactions with external societies and their influences. In particular, the Yeongnam region expanded exchanges with the central–western region through the medium of iron artifacts. During this process, iron artifacts produced in Yeongnam were supplied to the central–western region, while at the same time, Chinese iron implements and related technological information that had entered the central–western region were transmitted back to Yeongnam. Through this exchange, the Yeongnam region actively adopted foreign iron artifacts and, using them as a motif, recreated new forms of iron implements based on existing production technologies. The transformation of iron culture in the Yeongnam region during the Late Proto–Three Kingdoms period reflects not only technological change but also shifts in trade systems and social structures. It indicates the weakening of the Lelang Commandery–centered trade order and the emergence of new trade networks with the central–western region. Furthermore, the coexistence of traditional iron culture and the acceptance of foreign iron technology demonstrates that Yeongnam society developed a hybrid structure in which the old and new systems were integrated. Such social transformations provided an important foundation for the formation of Silla and Gaya in the early Three Kingdoms period.
